The Triqui territory is located in the “Mixtec knot” at the confluence of the Sierras Madre Oriental and Occidental, west of Oaxaca.
The Triqui have a rich traditional dress, including huipiles (embroidered dresses), enaguas (skirts), and other adornments such as coral or papelillo necklaces.
Women weave in backstrap loom and horizontal four-stakes loom, called “malacate”.
The huipiles (dress that starts at the neck and ends at the ankles) is woven by women in backstrap loom with either worsted or silk thread with colorful designs and different shades of red, are a clear example of the great skill they have since it takes from 3 to 6 months to make it depending on the design and size. The huipil is one of the most representative symbols of the Triqui people.
The Triquis have a rich oral tradition, music, dance and handicrafts.
The Triquis have faced challenges such as insecurity, abandonment, and lack of recognition of their rights by the government.
Migration in search of employment is common, both within Mexico and to the United States.
Women and the elderly are practically monolingual. Although there are those who also speak Mixteco.
The master Triqui artisans elaborated this beautiful huipil mixing the traditional designs and innovating with new colors resulting in this beautiful design.
Huipiles are not expensive, they are art and they should be valued for the time, effort and dedication that each Triqui artisan puts into her designs, leaving part of her life, knowledge and experience.
