The blouses from Huautla de Jiménez, Oaxaca, have their origins in the textile tradition of the Mazatec Sierra, characterised by hand embroidery representing local flora and fauna, as well as the use of coloured ribbons. These garments, derived from the traditional Mazatec huipil, symbolise the identity, strength and worldview of indigenous women. The designs, originally small and accompanied by vines, have evolved, replacing strips of fabric with colourful ribbons for practicality. They are made of muslin or poplin fabric and embroidered with cotton thread using cross-stitch, filling and basting techniques. Each embroidered garment is an expression of the cultural heritage passed down from generation to generation in the Mazatec Highlands. Image created with AI.
