Over time, the community of Santa Maria Zacatepec in Oaxaca has stopped wearing its traditional clothing on a daily basis. They usually reserve it for important events and patron saint festivals. Therefore, tacuates embroidery is also sold to the general public, as textiles and handmade garments. The women of the community are responsible for producing these pieces; they have learned all the weaving techniques from their mothers and grandmothers.
Tacuate huipil with ancient iconography, woven on a backstrap loom with cotton threads. It has a distinctive design with red stripes, a reinforced collar with red peaks, and a brocade hem that resembles ancient quartered edges.
Although the Tacuate huipil with “animals” has become popular (not to be confused with the design of the neighboring Amuzgos), there are still those who make the ancient designs of the double-headed eagle or, like this one, with the ancient patterns that refuse to disappear.
Embroideries that have remained from generation to generation taking care not to lose their culture and way of life.
