Coyuche cotton, also known as Coyuchi, is a variety of cotton native to Oaxaca, Mexico. Its name, which is derived from the Nahuatl "Coyoichcatl" (coyote skin), refers to its light brown color. It is a native fiber traditionally cultivated and woven by indigenous communities such as the Amuzgos, Triquis and Mixtecs. Coyuche cotton is one of the five native varieties of cotton in Mexico. It is traditionally grown and spun in the Costa Chica of Oaxaca and Guerrero, where it is used to weave garments and textiles. Coyuche cotton is distinguished by its color, soft texture and its ability to create garments with unique designs; it is also used in the production of embroidery, which is added to garments to give them a unique look. In addition to its cultural and historical value, Coyuche cotton also has an important economic value for the communities that grow it. Coyuche cotton is sold to local and national markets, and is also used to create handcrafted textile products such as in this garment. This Huipil was created entirely by hand from cotton planting, waiting to cultivation, spinning and weaving. Created with virgin cotton without treatments for this reason this garment is a little stiff. The hands of women artisans have created this beautiful garment in white with embroidery in the characteristic brown color of Coyuchi cotton. This huipil is made with the backstrap loom weaving, which is more time consuming and complicated to work with than the treadle loom. The effort and fatigue contributed by women artisans should be valued. A huipil is not expensive, it is art. Opening on the sides dress. The last two images show the reverse side of Huipil.
