The looms of Zinacantán, Chiapas, are an ancestral textile tradition characterized by hand weaving on a backstrap loom and the use of designs with flowers and other elements inspired by nature and local culture. Artisans mainly use the backstrap loom, which is attached to a tree and to the weaver's waist with a mecapal. Although historically the designs were inspired by corn, nowadays flowers predominate. The textile workshops are usually family-run and are located inside the houses or patios, where the garments are woven by hand. Textiles are an expression of identity, pride and social position. Variety of designs. Zinacantan's trees of life reflect the people's deep connection to nature and their worldview. Many trees represent the creation of the human being, the relationship between the divine and the earthly, and the importance of nature.
